Psychosocial Dimension

A framework for considering psychosocial aspects is being prepared by the ICMH in collaboration with Tulane and JHU. An abbreviated matrix already has been prepared and vetted by Nancy Mock. The complete framework and information management tools are to be available in draft form by end August. Nancy Mock and Ellen Mathys have summarized current literature on measuring psychosocial aspects of human security, which is part of a larger information strategy document. This document is currently under review by the expert review team. JHU has completed development of a mental health assessment tool for field implementing agencies. This tool has been field-tested. Instruments, manuals and training tools are posted on the CERTI website.

The psycho-social effects of conflict in the Third World,
Summerfield, Derek. Development in Practice Reader Development for Health. Vol. 1, Number 3 – Autumn 1991
Abstract: In current armed conflicts around the world, over 90 per cent of casualties are civilians. This article reviews medical and anthropological evidence of the psychosocial effects of extreme experiences such as torture, mutilation, rape, and the violent displacement of communities. The consequences for women and children are considered in particular. The author argues that the social development programmes of NGOs should be extended to support social networks and institutions in areas of conflict, and ends by giving guidelines for mental health promoters working in traumatised communities.
